Growing zucchini - that's how it's done

" Location:
The zucchini always prefers a sunny, sheltered location with as loose, nutrient-rich soil as possible. You should always provide the soil with sufficient compost.

"Sowing:
In May, immediately after the frosty days, zucchini can easily be sown outdoors - the zucchini seed is offered for this in the garden center. It should be noted here that two zucchini plants are usually sufficient to supply one family. Especially since the plants take up a lot of space because they overgrow on the ground.

Tip: You should plant zucchini in the area of ​​runner beans in order to use the garden space sensibly.

If several plants germinate, only the strong shoots should be raised as vegetable plants. You should keep a distance of about 70 centimeters from other plants when sowing.

" Maintenance:
Zucchini tolerate a lot of fertilizer, which is why they can be supplied with compost, nettle slurry or cow manure pellets several times during their rapid growth. In addition, you can of course also apply mineral fertilizers. Since snails love the delicious zucchini vegetables, you can also work with snail grain if necessary.

In addition, zucchini always need a moist floor, for which the use of slightly sun-warmed rainwater or stale tap water is recommended. Mildew can also be largely avoided in this way.

"Harvest:
In the case of zucchini, male flowers usually form first, closely followed by female flowers, which ultimately results in the fruits. If these are large enough for harvesting (approx. 20 centimeters), they can be cut off with a knife.

Tip: The rule for many varieties is that the earlier the zucchini is harvested, the more new fruit is produced. On top of that, small fruits have a better taste!
