The hardy wing spindle shrub attracts numerous admirers with its fiery red foliage in autumn. Read here how you should grow and care for this plant.

Eye-catcher in the garden: the wing spindle shrub

Capsule fruits are poisonous

While monotony slowly returns to the gardens, the wing spindle shrub ignites a very special splendor and thus becomes an absolute highlight in the garden. Already in early spring (April) it lures with green leaves and then fine green-yellow flowers (May to June). And in late autumn or in the first winter days after the leaves fall, it brings a little change to the dreary garden picture with orange-red, unfortunately poisonous capsule fruits (seeds).

Tip: Its cork-like branches are ideal for dry arrangements when dried.

The winged spindle tree, as it is often called, places hardly any demands on its location and its soil, it thrives practically everywhere. Even though soil should be loosened up as much as possible, especially during the growing season. This shrub plant also tolerates normal sunlight very well, but also grows in partial shade. Furthermore, the wing spindle shrub is considered to be well tolerated by other shrubs, which is why it does not need a single position in the garden.

Combat pests:
The very slowly growing wing spindle shrub (growth about 2 to 3 meters, also in width) is hardly attacked by pests or other diseases. However, very rarely white worms can sometimes be seen on the green leaves. Then the affected branches should be cut out immediately and disposed of in the trash (do not throw them on the compost). If there are still other worms in the wing spindle shrub, the larval hatching of these worms in June and September must be stopped urgently. A normal plant protection product (oil-based) against scale insects can also be used for infestation.

Watering and fertilizing:
On hot days, the wing spindle shrub, like all other plants, requires additional watering in the morning and evening. And in the spring, a full fertilizer application is recommended.

Rear section:
Pruning the shrub is only necessary if necessary. Mainly the transverse branches should be removed in winter - after falling leaves.
