Rolled turf is a good alternative to get a well-tended new lawn within a few hours. Laying is by no means restricted to professionals. Smaller areas can also be laid independently. To dream lawn in just one day? Still hard to imagine for many. But it works. The solution is: turf. Since turf is naturally more expensive than lawn seeds, laying is particularly useful for garden owners with smaller gardens.
The advantages are obvious. On the one hand, you don't have to wait that long for the lawn seeds to germinate and the lawn has grown, and on the other hand, you don't have to struggle with weeds on turf. That is an advantage enough, I think.
But before you can enjoy the sight of the finished lawn, it must first be professionally installed. So that this works without problems, here is a small guide.
Laying turf - explained step by step
1 The most important thing with turf is the ground. You have to prepare it accordingly so that the lawn can also tackle well. If there is still old lawn on your area, this must of course first be removed in advance. It is best to start early. Then the soil must be loosened well. In the case of new building plots in particular, the area is very tight on the construction vehicles. The best thing to do here is with a motor hoe. In the case of very heavy floors, it is also advisable to add some construction sand. This increases the permeability.
2 The day before the turf is to be laid, the floor must be raked. Make sure that the floor is free of stones and roots. Loosening up with the rake is important so that the roots of the turf can anchor themselves to the ground as quickly as possible.
3 The final step in the preparation involves deep rolling the floor. It must be sturdy so that the lawn can be laid without any problems.
" My advice: When doing floor work, make sure that your surface is really flat. Small hills or dents can be easily leveled out with a rake or an inverted rake.
Lay turfLaying itself must always be very quick with turf. If the lawn is cut off in the lawn school, you have a maximum of 36 hours to get it into the home garden. However, if you have prepared the floor well, this should not be a problem.
4 Place the first sheet on a straight edge and roll out the lawn lengthways. Now you do this one by one. Rolled turf is laid together (as with clinker walls or the like). Basically, you should make sure that there are no joints or overlaps. The lawn can be easily cut for curves and edges.
" Watch out!!! Enter the freshly laid lawn only in connection with wooden boards. This way you avoid punctual compaction of the soil, which is very difficult to compensate for afterwards.
5 Once the lawn has been completely laid, walk over the area with a lawn roller filled with water. First in the opposite direction and then again in the longitudinal direction. Again, make sure that you only enter areas that you have already compacted in advance.
6 Not only freshly sown lawn needs a lot of water, but also turf, after all, it should grow as quickly as possible. Pour plenty of water on the installed surface. About 15 liters per square meter are appropriate. The easiest way to do this is to set up a sprinkler. You can also do it by hand with a garden shower.
7 In the next few weeks, you need to make sure that you water well. It is recommended to blow up the lawn once or twice a day. So the turf thrives very quickly. You can enter the new lawn from the first day. However, it is only fully resilient after about four to six weeks.
And now have fun laying turf!
