Regular mowing is the be-all and end-all for lush green and well-kept turf. Especially at the beginning, mistakes are often made.

Turf is becoming increasingly popular with garden and property owners. No wonder, because in just a few hours the patch of earth has turned into a lush green lawn. Just last year, my husband and I decided to populate our 120 square meter property with turf. (Reading tip: Lay turf - Here's how) We were simply impressed by the many advantages of turf. All advantages of turf and a quality check of the providers can be found at Ö

The children were very happy. There were no barrier tapes as with the neighboring children, which prohibit entering the lawn. Of course, you should be a little careful with freshly laid turf, but the rules are much looser.

Like freshly sown lawn, turf also needs proper care. Instead of holes and gaps, the new lawn should finally thrive properly.

The first mowing

The lawn is relocated and the joy of the new lawn is still great. After a few days the question then arises: "When is turf mowed for the first time?" We also dealt with the question quite quickly. We did a lot of research and contacted our provider. After all, we didn't want to do anything wrong.

Here are our results:
Turf should be mowed as soon as it has grown. You can easily check that at the corners. It is important that the lawn is already about 4 to 5 centimeters long. The right time for playing lawn is 3.5 or 4 centimeters. If the weather is favorable, it can happen after a week.

The right lawnmower

If you invest a lot of money in turf, you naturally want it to be treated as well as possible. Since our old electric lawnmower has given up the ghost, we have not only bought turf, but also a new lawnmower.

This time it should be a petrol lawnmower. The annoying dragging of the cable in our very winding garden was just annoying. In the end, we chose the BRAST petrol lawn mower. Comparable to other petrol mowers, this is very cheap. The cutting width of 40 centimeters was also made for us. So we can finally get through comfortably between the sandpit and the bed.

Regular mowing is important

With turf, mowing should not be put on the back burner. It is important that you push the mower across the lawn at least once every 5 to 8 days. The grasses quickly form new side shoots, leaves and spouts. So the lawn can compact itself optimally.

The distance between the individual mowing cycles also depends on the cutting length of the lawn. A length between 3 and 5 centimeters is normal. However, this also depends on the use. Play lawns should not exceed 3 centimeters in length, in shadow turf a length of 4 centimeters applies.

" Note: If turf is cut too short, it may happen that no new shoots form. This can easily create holes and gaps in the lawn.

Mowing too rarely is not good for the lawn. The coarser types of grass grow taller than the finer ones. When it comes to lawn blooming, it is almost too late. After that, the lawn would die. So always mow regularly and you will enjoy your new lawn for a long time.

Care tips for turf

✰ Fertilize turf 3 times a year

Mowing is not the only important factor for a beautiful and dense result. Adequate nutrient supply must also be guaranteed. Long-term fertilizer is best suited for this. We have specifically chosen the high-quality Compo lawn fertilizer with long-term effects. Here 4 kg, sufficient for 150 square meters, are available for just under 16 euros.

The best times for fertilizing are:

  • March April
  • June July
  • September

However, fertilizer can only work if it combines with water. So either wait for a rainy season or water well after fertilizing.

✰ Constant irrigation necessary at the beginning

Especially in the beginning, it is very important that you constantly water the new lawn. This is the only way it can grow and thrive properly. Only when the lawn is properly rooted in the ground should you stop watering consistently.

We kept our lawn permanently moist for 2.5 weeks. Especially in the early morning and late evening hours, we wet the lawn really well. But beware! No puddles are allowed to form. If the lawn gets too wet, the leaves will rot. If you water too little, you risk a dried up lawn.
