Flower bulbs must be planted in autumn and should never be stacked on top of each other. Our little guide gives you these and more tips.
Autumn is the time for flower bulbs to be planted so that tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses greet you in spring. Spring bloomers should not be missing in any garden and are particularly good for planting borders or as a limitation of paths.
Plant in autumn
Flower bulbs are planted in the ground in autumn, which can happen well into December. However, it shouldn't be too late either, because the onions should form the first shoots before the frost. These do not look out of the onion yet, but are close to it.
What is the planting depth for bulbs?
As a rule of thumb: set the planting hole about twice as deep as the bulbs are thick. Make sure that the floor is nice and loose. If not, just loosen the heavy soil with a little sand.
Very important: The tip of the flower bulb must point upwards!
Tip: put flower bulbs in odd groups
You can plant the bulbs individually, but also in groups, which of course looks particularly beautiful in the flowering period. It looks particularly natural and beautiful when the flower bulbs are planted in odd groups. For example in groups of 3 or 5. Please refer to the packaging for the correct planting distance.
Cut plants that have faded away in spring
After flowering in spring, cut the faded plants off the ground and leave them in for a few weeks. This allows the onions to gather strength and absorb additional nutrients from the soil. Leaves and stems are not removed until they have withered.
Discard moldy onions
The onions will come out after about four weeks. Here you check whether the onions are still in order. Please dispose of broken, dried or moldy onions (not on the compost!).
Store bulbs in a cool, airy place
The other onions are then stored cool and airy until autumn, ideally on a spread newspaper on the floor or on the shelf. Never stack the onions on top of each other in a box - this promotes mold growth. Onions that have already been infected can also infect others. Anyone who pays attention to this will have a lot of fun with their spring messengers again next spring.
