Despite intensive care, the lawn in the garden can become denser over time. With an aerating device you can quickly solve this problem.Heavily used lawns compact quickly
Most gardeners used to shrug their shoulders when a few blades of grass were too long here and there after mowing the lawn. It looks very different today. The lawn must be perfectly cut and shine in a lush green. In theory, everything is very easy to do, but in practice it looks very different. It can happen that the lawn becomes denser over time.
But don't panic! That can happen to the best gardener. And of course there are devices that can be used to quickly remedy this problem. We are talking about a so-called aerating device. This allows even extremely compacted lawns to be loosened up again. One speaks of a lawn ventilation.
Reasons for compacting a lawn
Reasons for compacting lawns include increased driving on the lawn or using it as a sports field, as a sidewalk and the like. Heavily used lawns generally compact faster and faster, which can cause waterlogging on the surface. In addition, compacting leads to increased moss and weed formation (reading tips: weeds in the lawn - 2 tips and getting rid of moss in the lawn - 4 tips).
How do aerators work?
When aerating, the soil structure is “perforated” with so-called spikes. Through the perforation, the compacted soil structure is aerated and can be filled with fresh filler material, e.g. Humus, sand or lawn fertilizer can be added. Various aerator spikes are offered for this work process or used in the devices, which can be adapted to the different conditions on site.
What types of aerators are there?
Different types of aerating devices are available in specialist shops, which, depending on the version, can make the strenuous work considerably easier. Which device is best for your lawn depends on the size of the lawn.
If you have a very large lawn, then a large device is of course an absolute must. However, this is very expensive, which is why you should really think very carefully about a purchase. Many garden centers also rent these devices at low daily rates or offer the aerating activity within their services. The following equipment is recommended for normal size gardens:
➤ Electric aerator:
Most aerating devices look a bit like a lawn mower. And in terms of handling, they are very similar to a lawn mower. Instead of a knife, these electrical aerating devices (available here, for example) simply have spikes on the underside. With the device you then have to move up and down evenly on the lawn.
➤ Rolling lawn aerator:
As an alternative to an electrical aerating device, you can also get a so-called "rolling lawn aerator". This device is similar to a spindle lawn mower. The only difference is that a rolling lawn aerator (e.g. available here) does not have a spindle, but a roller with spikes. With this aerator you just have to move up and down evenly on the lawn.
➤ Lawn fan shoes:
If you only have a small lawn in the garden, we recommend using simple and inexpensive aerating equipment. We recommend e.g. Lawn fan shoes (available here e.g.). These are soles with spikes that you simply have to strap under your normal shoes. Then you just have to walk across the lawn and you're done.
When is the best time to aerify?
It is sufficient to aerate compacted lawns once a year. The best time for aerification is spring between March and May, or autumn between September and October. It is important to note that you should never carry out the work during long periods of rain or a strong heat.
